Can Discover World help me plan a trip?

You bet. You can research destinations by using the site search to find any country, city, or place. Read in-depth information, look through travel essentials, get familiar with the climate, local customs, history, and much more for millions of places worldwide.

Get oriented by using the Explore map that shows detailed information about places of interest and popular things to see. Search any destination and find nearby places of interest.

And, of course – find trips from real travelers to where you are going.

Any time you see a place you are interested in – click the heart icon over the image to save for future reference. Saved items are grouped by destinations so they are easy to find while traveling.

Where is the website information coming from? Can I trust it?

Discover World collects information from many reputable sources, such as online encyclopedias, government websites, geo-mapping resources, databases of images and venues, and many others.

We continuously add sources to our system so it becomes the most complete aggregation of useful world travel information. In addition, travelers like you can contribute local knowledge and travel experience. More user-contribution features will be released in the months to come.

How can I find things to do around a place I’m visiting?

First, find a place or destination you are visiting by using the main site Search. Then click the map icon in the top menu bar to open the Map search nearby.

This is where you can search for different types of places nearby, or for specific attractions, restaurants, and venues around the destination you have selected. You can move the map around and see results updated in real time.

What are “Reasons to Visit”? Can I add my own reasons?

Reasons to Visit are a collection of common travel interests that bring people to a destination.

We provide suggestions for the reasons people visit a place based on the feedback from other travelers and information we have about attractions and activities around the area. The list of reasons is a result of a research project. We continue to refine this list and update it from time to time.

Everyone is different and you may visit a place for very different reasons. We suggest that you take the suggested reasons as a general recommendation about what to expect in a new destination.

If you are familiar with a place, please use the Have other reasons button to share your knowledge and experience. It will greatly help other travelers.

Can I save places to visit later?

Any time you see a place or a destination you are interested in – click the heart icon over the image to save it for future reference. Saved items are grouped by destinations so it is easy to find them while traveling.

You will need a free account to save items. To make things simpler, you can log in with a Facebook or Google account so you don’t have to remember another account.

In addition to saving places and destinations by searching for them, you can also save them from trips of other people. This is the best way to learn from the collective experiences of other travelers.

Can I save places from someone else's trip?

Any time you are viewing someone's trip and come across a place or destination you like, click the heart icon to save it for future reference. Saved items are grouped by destinations so it is easy to find them during your travels.

You can view saved items in your account and organize them using labels.

I see incorrect information about a destination. How do I report it?

You can use the orange Found a Problem? button on the right edge of every page to report an issue.

Can I help contribute or select better photos for a place?

Currently, it is not possible to upload your own photos, but you can help select the best and most relevant photos by voting for them.

When viewing any place, click the photos to see larger images and then vote for photos that best represent the place. Photos that get the most votes are displayed first, while photos that are down-voted will be displayed last.

Doing this improves everyone’s experience, so – thank you!

Keep in mind that voting counts are not updated immediately and may take a few days to reflect based on continuous submissions.

Can I see where photos were taken?

While viewing photos of any place you can see them on a map if location data was captured.

Click a photo to display it larger, then click the red map button at the top which will unroll a map showing where photos were taken. Note that not all photos have location information.

I see a photo that is inappropriate or illegal. Can you remove it?

If you see a photo that you believe to be inappropriate or illegal, click to open it and select the exclamation point button from the voting controls in the lower right corner. This will alert us to investigate.

The photos I see do not represent the place well. Can you remove them?

We use photos from a variety of available sources. You can help us display the best photos by voting for the photos that represent the place best.

When viewing any place, click the photos to see larger images and then vote for photos that best represent the place. Photos that get the most votes are displayed first, while photos that are down-voted will be displayed last.

Why do I need to have an account?

Having an account allows you to take advantage of everything Discover World has to offer.

  • Save and organize places you like (by searching and from trips of other travelers}
  • Vote good photos and contribute travel knowledge (because it's fun and helpful)
  • Publish and share your trips using the Discover World Trip Companion mobile app
  • Friends can follow your travels and be notified when you publish new trips
What does it mean to connect a Google or Facebook account?

Connecting your Google or Facebook account is a convenient way to avoid remembering another user name/password combination.

When your Google or Facebook account is connected, you can log in to Discover World automatically using Google or Facebook authentication.

As long as you are logged in to Google or Facebook, you will be logged in to Discover World.

I can’t login, what do I do?

No problem, we can help. If you've created your Discover World account using Facebook or Google authentication, simply log in to one of these services and you will be automatically logged in to Discover World.

If you've created your account using email address, try resetting your password. Click the Login with email and password link and then Forgot Password button. We will email instructions on how to reset password to the email address used to create the account.

If you are still having troubles, please contact us and we will be happy to help you.

Can I change the email address I use as a login?

Yes, you can change the email address, password, and other personal settings in the Profile & Settings page available from the account menu in the top-right corner (look for your name).

Can I delete my account?

To close and permanently delete your Discover World account please contact us and we will help you.

Capturing a trip with the Trip Companion app

What iOS versions are supported?

The Discover World Trip Companion mobile app has been tested and supported on the latest iOS 10 and later.

Which iOS devices are supported?

The Discover World Trip Companion mobile app supports iPhone 5s and all later models including the Plus sizes and iPads.

What can I capture with the Trip Companion app?

The Trip Companion mobile app captures your movements including walking and transport, your stops and visits to places, and photos you take.

In addition, the app gives you the ability to capture memories by including notes, feelings, and photo captions. You have full control over the photos and places to include in your trip.

A complete trip map is generated as you go with a visual story that can be published on the web and shared.

Can I use more than one mobile device on the same trip?

You can use several mobile devices to contribute photos, notes, and feelings to the trip. This is particularly helpful when several family members are traveling together or if you use a tablet in addition to a phone.

However, there is always one primary device used for capturing the route.

To set up a contributing device, install the Trip Companion app and log in using the same account on all of the devices. The app will prompt you to start contributing to the trip in progress.

Can people I’m traveling with add their photos to my trip?

Other people using mobile devices can contribute photos, notes, and feelings to your trip. However, there is always one primary device used for capturing the route.

Do I need to keep the phone on all the time?

If you turn off your phone while traveling, the Trip Companion app will not be able to record your route. Even if you do not have cellular service, if your phone is turned on it will capture your GPS locations and anything else you record with the app.

It is better to keep the phone on so the app can save all the places you’ve visited during the trip. Plus you can take photos, type Notes, and capture your feelings along the way.

How does the app track my whereabouts and movements?

The Trip Companion app uses Location services (GPS) on your phone to capture the route. It matches places you visit with the Foursquare global database of venues to create a complete interactive story of your trip.

Why does the app need Location Services set to “Always”?

To continuously capture your trip the app needs to track your movements and location, whether you are walking, driving, or stopping for some food. Even when the phone is in your pocket the app is saving your route – that’s why it always needs access to Location services.

What about my privacy? Is my location shared with anyone?

You control what information is published about your trip and how often it is updated. Most of the time, information published about your trip is historical and not real-time.

You control who can view your trip under Trip Settings | Who can view. The options are:

  • Anyone – anyone can find and view published trip details
  • Only your people – your followers and anyone you give the link to
  • Private – only you can see the trip

Discover World does not share your account or trip information with any other party.

What if I don’t want anyone else to see my trip?

You can make your trip Private and only you will see it. To control who can view your trip go to Trip Settings | Who can view.

Does the app use battery even when I’m not traveling?

When a trip is not being captured, the battery usage is negligible.

Do I need a data connection to use the mobile app?

You don’t need to have data connection to capture your trip since your device has a built-in GPS which does not require data service.

The data connection is needed to match your route to places you visit and to publish and share your trip online.

How can I minimize data usage during the trip?

Data services are used to match your route to places you visit, and to publish and share your trip online.

The most data is used for uploading photos you take. If it is important to reduce data usage, you can specify to upload photos only over Wi-Fi connections, when available. You can find this option under Discover | Settings | App Settings

Will using the mobile app affect my battery life?

The Trip Companion app runs in the background and is optimized to use as little battery power as possible. We spent a lot of time on developing clever technology that would make battery last as long as possible.

However, since it is continuously getting location information, the app does use some battery.

Under typical usage, your phone will last full day on a single charge. It is recommended that you plug it in to charge at night. We also recommend that you travel with an external battery pack.

When you are stopped for a long time, the app's battery usage is negligible.

What if I put the phone in the Airplane Mode?

Your route can still be captured while in the Airplane mode, but may be less accurate.

Why does the app need access to my photos?

The photos you take while traveling can be automatically added to the trip timeline to create a rich and interactive presentation of your trip experiences. To enable this feature, the Trip Companion app needs permission to access device photos.

You can also add and remove photos manually, and add captions.

If I delete a photo on my phone, will it also be deleted from my trip? What about editing/cropping?

While traveling, deleting a photo from your device will automatically remove it from the trip. This is particularly helpful when deleting bad photos or sorting through sequences.

It is recommended that before you review photos in the Trip Companion app, you review and edit photos in your device Camera Roll. This will save you from duplicate work.

Cropping and editing of photos made with the Photos app will automatically update the photos in your trip.

Removing photos after the trip

After you return from the trip, you may want to remove and archive the photos to free up space on the device. Please do this carefully because if you remove photos before they are published they might be removed from the trip.

To make sure you can remove photos safely, go into your app settings under Discover | Settings and review the Safe to remove device photos option. The default is after 2 weeks.

Why does the app need access to Motion & Fitness activity on my phone?

The app uses motion sensors to detect the mode of transportation you are using as well as count the number of steps you take during travels. This improves the overall precision and provides additional information such as trip intensity level.

Some suggestions for visited places are incorrect, can I change them?

We try our best to recognize places you are visiting using location matching. However, in some cases we may guess incorrectly (for example, if you are in an area with many places nearby).

You can easily select the correct place from the list of places nearby, and even add a custom place.

How do I control what details about my trip are visible to other people?

In addition to changing the overall visibility of your published trip, you control which details of the trip are visible.

You can:

  • remove/add photos
  • edit/remove Notes and Feelings
  • change movement activity types
  • change/remove places visited

You can also set your trip to be published manually so you can post updates after you are finished making all the changes.

Can I remove some of the visited places and photos from the trip?

While using the Trip Companion app you can remove places and photos you don't wish to publish.

Removing a Place

Open your trip in the app, switch to the Timeline and locate the place you would like to remove. Select the three-dot action menu next to the place and tap Remove in the pop up menu.

Note that this action cannot be undone.

Removing a Photo

Open your trip in the app, switch to the Timeline and locate the photo(s) you would like to remove. Tap thumbnail to open the Photo Viewer and select Remove over the photo(s).

Note that doing so will not delete photos from your phone, the photos are only removed from your trip.

Sharing a Trip

How can my friends and family follow my travels?

If you want your friends and family to follow your travels, you need to share the link to your trip with them. They will be able to follow your trip and see the updates when you publish them.

They can also subscribe to receive email updates to your trip.

Can I limit access to my trip to friends and family only?

Yes, you can control who can see your trip.

Using the Trip Companion mobile app, open the trip and select Edit Trip from the menu – scroll down and under Who can view select Only your people. After this change is published, a person will need to have a link to the trip in order to view it.

What do different colors of map routes mean?

Different route colors are used to differentiate modes of transportation.

A blue line shows flights.

Red lines show motorized transport like cars, trains, buses, etc.

Green lines show self-powered movements made on foot or on a bicycle.

If you see a gray line, that means the phone couldn't record movement because it was turned off or there was no GPS signal (such as when traveling underground on a metro).

How is the “Intensity level” calculated for a day/trip?

The intensity level is based on the number of steps taken each day, and averaged across the duration of a trip.

The exact thresholds for each level are:

  • EASY - under 2.5k steps for a single dot
  • LIGHT - 2.5k to 5k steps for two dots
  • MODERATE - 5k to 10k steps for three dots
  • ACTIVE - more than 10k steps for four dots
Can I remove some of the visited places and photos from the trip?

While using the Trip Companion app you can remove places and photos you don't wish to publish.

Saving destinations and places

Can I save places I’d like to visit in the future?

Yes -- click the Save button or the heart icon and you will save places for later. Everywhere on the Discover World website -- millions of attractions, destinations, cities and restaurants. As you browse destinations or follow trips by other travelers save places or attractions you like, so you will remember them when planning your own trips.

How can I save places visited by other travelers?

Any place you see appearing on a timeline of a trip can be saved. As you view other travelers’ trips, click the heart icon displayed over visited places and that will add them to your saved items. What a great way to benefit from the experience of actual travelers!

How can I view saved places on a map?

Yes, you can show saved items on the map - just click the Map button and your saved items will be shown on a map with a little heart icon overlay. You can now search for things to do or places to visit around your saved items. You can toggle saved items on or off on the map.

Why do I need an account to save places?

The places or attractions that you like are saved in your user account. You will be able to access them from any computer, tablet, or phone as long as you are logged in to your account. That’s why you need to create a free account to keep the saved places stored and accessible.

What are the different ways of organizing places I save?

Your saved items are automatically saved by destination. For example, all saved items in United Kingdom are saved under United Kingdom and are further sorted into regions and cities.

Saved items are also automatically displayed in groups, by category: Cities and Regions, Things to See, Food & Drink, and so on.

In addition you can add your own labels to quickly organize and sort your places into categories, for example “must see”, “maybe”, “call ahead”, and so on. Type your own or select pre-defined labels to further sort your saved items. You can easily filter saved items by picking which labels to display.

You can add even more details about each item by jotting quick notes, for example to remind you to grab a camera, to save an important reservation number, or tour guide’s phone number.

What types of places can I save on Discover World?

You can save and organize any place you find on the Discover World website or included in trips by other travelers: destinations, such as regions and cities, attractions, museums, things to do and see, venues, restaurants, transportation hubs, airports, and more. Any time you see a place or a destination you are interested in, click the heart icon to save it.

Can I use my own labels for marking places?

Yes, you can add your own labels. Click the plus icon on the saved item to add labels and type your own label. Recently used labels will be saved and will show up on top of the list so you can add your labels to other items.

How do I see my saved places while I travel?

While you are traveling, your saved items are easily accessible whether you’re viewing on a laptop, or traveling with a smartphone. Log in to Discover World and click the heart icon at the top of any page (or from the web menu on a phone). All of your saved items are there as a list and on a map.

Subscriptions

How long do trips stay online for free?

Your trips stay online for 45 days.

Is the free 45 days from day 1 of the trip or from the end of the trip?

The free 45 days starts when you publish your trip. After 45 days, you will need to upgrade to one of the paid plans to keep your trips published online.

What happens to a trip when it expires?

When a trip expires it is no longer displayed online, but it is still saved on your phone or tablet and can be re-published online.

Why do I have to pay for this service?

It cost money to store trip details and photos online securely. We’d rather charge a small fee than compromise the quality of service with advertising and shady promotions.

Do I need to pay for each trip I publish online?

You do not need to pay for each trip. We offer two plans: one includes the ability to keep up to 3 trips online, and the second one, which allows to publish an unlimited number of trips.

Can I start with one level and upgrade to a higher level later?

Yes, the Weekender plan allows to keep up to 3 trips online. As you travel and capture more trips, simply upgrade to the higher level plan and keep all your travel memories in one place.

Will I get prorated credit from my current plan when I upgrade?

Yes, when you upgrade you receive the prorated credit for your current subscription.

What methods of payment do you accept?

Currently we accept most major credit and debit cards: VIsa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express.

How do I know that paying you is safe and secure?

All transactions are handled using secure, encrypted connections. We comply with all Payment Card Industry requirements to provide secure payment processing for our customers.

I missed the deadline and my trips are no longer online. Can I still get them back?

Your trips are saved on your phone or tablet. You can re-publish them online after signing up for The Weekender of The Globetrotter plans.

I have a feature request, how do I tell you about it?

We’d love to hear your suggestions. Please contacts us and tell us what’s on your mind.

Are my trips securely stored?

All trips are securely stored in geo-distributed data centers. You can control whether your trips are public, private, or accessible to people who have a link.

What is your refund policy?

We offer a 30-day money back guarantee. If you contacts us and let us know within 30 days of signing up, we will issue a full refund.

Are there any other fees?

There are no other fees. If you run out of storage with your subscriptions, you will be able to purchase additional storage but very few accounts will ever need that.

Do you have a monthly subscription option?

Based on popular feedback, we offer annual subscriptions only. But please tell us if this is something you’d prefer.

Do I need to have a credit card on file?

The credit card on file is used to renew your subscription to avoid service interruptions, so your trips stay online.

How do I cancel my subscription?

If you are not happy with the service, please contact us within 30 days of signing up and we will issue a full refund.

What happens to my trips if I cancel my subscription?

Your trips are saved on your phone and tablet, but they will not be displayed online. You can publish them online again by signing up for a new subscription.
